Below is Vanessa’s last email:

“Here are the readings for the ‘body in pain’ session of the nineteenth-century interdisciplinary study group on October 3. Liz (History) will be talking about Fanny Burney’s account of her 1811 mastectomy, and I’ll (English) be talking about Melville’s account of Marquesan facial tattooing in Typee (observed 1842, published 1846). We look forward to seeing you on  Friday 3rd, Rogers Room, 1-3.

At the last meeting it was decided to meet only one other time this semester, on November 14, the session on travel. The sessions on ‘Unusual Friendships’ and ‘Elocution and Etiquette’ will be carried over until next year, when group members with relevant interests who are currently off on research trips will be back to talk about their work.”
